How to find the
right policy
Of course,
not all short van insurance companies are equal. You will
find a wide range of possibilities in terms of pricing,
quality of service, reliability, etc. The rate structure can
vary quite widely from company to company. Some policies
will allow you to use the certificate insurance to tax the
vehicle, which is subject to acceptance by the DVLA/Post
Office. There can be different policies as to additional
drivers and/or additional vehicles. If the drivers of the
van will be from foreign countries with foreign driver’s
licences, you should check to make sure they are covered.
Some companies allow you to get quotes and to purchase cover
online, while others do not offer such convenience - but the
online companies are usually considerably cheaper because of
the cost savings that automation brings.
As with any other service, buyers usually benefit by
shopping around first. Major search engines like Google,
Yahoo and Bing are a good place to start, as are the major
internet directories. There are web sites that specialize in
allowing users to compare prices and policy benefits from a
wide range of companies and often you can sort search
results by criteria like price and benefits included
although at the time of writing we have been unable to find
a price comparison site that compares short term policies,
although we have seen a few that claim to, but don't and try
to sell you a yearly policy instead! Of course, a tried and
true method of getting recommendations is to ask people who
you trust for any suggestions they may be able to offer.
So, if you are looking to borrow a van on a short term
basis, or if you will be lending someone your own van, a short term
policy is something you should consider. Even if you are
just test driving a van, or have purchased a new van, a
temporary policy is often the perfect solution.
